Why embracing the RESET button is the secret to capturing authentic moments.

I used to spend a lot of time imagining the perfect photoshoot.

Maybe you've imagined it too. You know, the one where sunlight filters gently through the clouds. Clients arrive exactly on time. Outfits coordinate effortlessly. Smiles happen naturally at exactly the right moment. No wind, no distractions, nothing awkward at all.

But here's something I've learned along the way: the perfect photoshoot doesn’t actually exist. At least, not in the way most of us picture it.

Truth is, the sessions I end up loving the most are almost always the least perfect. Usually, they involve something unexpected. Windy days turn into hilarious moments of tangled hair. Kids decide running through grass is far more interesting than smiling directly at the camera. Athletes miss their big moment, but end up laughing genuinely, resulting in amazing candid shots.

Think about your favorite photos. What makes them truly memorable? Is it because every detail was perfect, or because they captured real moments and authentic emotions?

When I first began photography, I obsessed over details. I planned everything, studied poses endlessly, and carefully thought through each dress, each outfit, and each location. But sometimes, right in the middle of a shoot, my mind would just go blank. I’d completely forget the poses I’d carefully studied and the perfect location I’d imagined. My brain would freeze, and I wouldn’t even remember what I wanted to say next.

Have you ever had that happen? That moment of panic when you lose track of your carefully laid plans?

Here’s the good news: it’s okay. It’s more than okay. It’s normal.

I’ve learned something powerful from these moments. Instead of hiding or trying to pretend everything is fine, I just stop and take a breath. And then I tell my clients honestly, “Hey, I just need a moment.”

I call it a "RESET." And I introduce this idea at the beginning of every shoot. If my client needs a pause, they say "reset." If I lose track of my thoughts or feel stuck, I do the same thing: "reset." It breaks the tension, makes us laugh, and brings us both back into the moment.

This simple act of honesty transforms the whole atmosphere of a photoshoot. Instead of trying to force perfection, we embrace the authenticity of the experience. Instead of chasing flawless images, we capture real moments—moments of laughter, connection, and genuine feeling.

Maybe you're planning a photoshoot right now and feeling stressed about getting everything just right. What if you tried the RESET approach too? What if you embraced the fact that things might not go exactly as planned, and that this could actually make your shoot even better?

Because, trust me, years from now, you'll look back at these photos and cherish the imperfect, spontaneous moments the most. These are the pictures that will mean something. They'll show who you really are, not who you tried to be.

The best photos aren't perfect. They're real.

Are you ready to embrace that with me?
