Meet Cass Rufus, Elmhurst Portrait Photographer

Cass Rufus is the founder of Rise Up Creations, a portrait photographer based in Elmhurst, Illinois, serving seniors, graduates, and families across the western Chicago suburbs. With five years behind the camera and more than two decades as an educator, Cass brings a rare ability to make people feel at ease the moment the session begins

I believe great photographs begin with comfort, trust, and presence. When people feel at ease, confidence shows naturally.

What matters most to me is not forcing a moment, but creating space for it to happen. The best images come from connection, not direction alone.

I pay close attention to the small details others might miss, the way someone settles into themselves, the pause between poses, and the quiet confidence that appears when they stop trying.

How it started

Photography first mattered to me long before it became a profession. It started with my girls, capturing the quiet milestones, the everyday joy, and the moments that pass too quickly to hold onto.

What kept me shooting was the ability to freeze a feeling in time. When the shutter closed, the moment did not disappear. It became something you could return to, something that carried the why and the when.

That understanding deepened when I stepped into sports photography. While working as a Sports Media Director, I began hearing from parents and players who saw themselves in the images, not just the action, but the emotion within it.

That feedback was confirmation. The camera was not just recording moments. It was revealing them.

THE EXPERIENCE, SHAPED

For more than twenty years, I've worked as an educator, which means I've spent my career learning to read people, especially young ones. I notice the small shifts most miss: body language, energy, the exact moment someone feels comfortable enough to drop the performance and just be themselves.

That awareness carries directly into every session. I create space for connection first, so confidence can settle in naturally. Clients do not feel rushed or posed into something they are not. They feel seen, guided, and at ease.

The result is images that feel honest and personal. Not forced. Not performative. Just real presence captured in a way that lasts.

HOW IT SHOWS UP TODAY

When someone steps in front of my camera, my first focus is not the pose. It is how they feel. Most people do not need to be fixed. They need a moment to settle in and trust the process.

I guide with intention and clarity, but never pressure. Direction is calm, natural, and responsive. Confidence builds quietly, one moment at a time.

That is when the images shift. Not because someone tried harder, but because they stopped trying at all. What shows up is honest, relaxed, and unmistakably them.

Clients Say

“Cass was thoughtful and prepared from start to finish. He made sure my vision matched his, guided me through posing, and kept everything organized. I loved my senior photos and would absolutely recommend him.”

WHAT I HOPE YOU FEEL

I hope these images feel familiar in the best way. Not like a performance or a version of someone they were told to be, but simply themselves on a good day. Relaxed. Confident. Seen.

More than anything, I want this experience to feel easy. A space where your child feels comfortable enough to be real, and where you can trust that who they are in this moment is being captured with care. The kind of images that do not just mark a milestone, but bring you back to it, every time you look.

READY WHEN YOU ARE

If this feels like the right fit, I would love to learn more about your senior and what matters most to your family.
